Supernatural: Nevermore
When I saw the offer for the original Supernatural novel Nevermore on Amazon I was delighted. I've been trying to convince myself to read a real book in English for a while and thought that was the perfect start.
Now, after the first 9 chapters of it, I've got to leave off some steam about it.
Firstly, I just can't shake off the feeling that the writer is female. It's Keith R. A. DeCandido who from the name at least is male but I can't help it. It just feels female.
Secondly, why the hell is the writer so obsessed about parking? I swear if I read another half-page of how difficult it is for Dean and Sam to park the Impala, I'll rip the book to peaces. Maybe I'm missing something, was there anything in the dialogs of the series I didn't catch about the Winchesters non-existent parking skills? If anything the show tells us how expertly both of them handle the car even in the most dangerous situations. That race at night with the ghost monster truck? Damn great driving. Or Kroaton!
Thirdly, since when does Dean have blue eyes? And well, I'm not so sure about Sam's being plain brown either.
Fourthly, what's up with the characters in the book? They're sooo stereotype, and they're dumb and flat. Okay, the whole writing is kinda flat. It just doesn't drag me in.
Fifthly, everything written about Sam and Dean's relationship is about how they are so different from each other. Actually, I'm really wondering how they get along at all. There is nothing mentioned that might keep them together or make them rely on each other. But they're pretty good on laughing about and annoying each other.
Sixthly, why does the writer keep repeating all the stuff we know from the series? I think people who buy this book have seen the show. They don't need to have a pretty bad resume of past events every five pages.
I guess I could go on and on and I guess I'm over-sensitive about the stuff BUT I've read fanfic written way better than this with better ideas and a better feel for the sideline characters.
I'll try to finish the other half of Nevermore but I don't really like reading it and if it was "just fanfic" I've closed that window at least the moment I'd've read about Dean's blue eyes. *sigh*
Please share your opinion or tell me I'm wrong or why. Maybe for a native English speaker it feels different?

The author is a guy, and he's a douche.
That book *sucks*.
You're utterly right - it's just lame.
*pet pet pet*
I'm sorry you had to read *that* as your first English book.
And he's gonna write a third one.
*gag*
So, so lame.
YOu can read reviews and comments the author made in the posts here:

He has an lj, and when people made comments about it, he got a bit snotty and was all 'i've written a ton of books!' Plus he dissed fanfiction on a website and my fucking god - he's *writing* fan fiction! So, you know...lame.
*waves*

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I had a blast seeing the novel and the author ripped apart. I just loved the poll.
Sometimes I think I don't get stuff because of the non-nativeness but I guess I can trust my feeling for fanfic. Did a test last week, said I could go for the CPE (Certificate of Proficiency in English) with a bit preparation. *is proud* Unfortunately, next test around here will be not before autumn/winter 2008. Enough time to study for it though. *hee*
Btw, thank you very much for the book recs some time ago. I haven't decided yet what book to read but I'll tell you as soon as I'm through with it. Your recs and generally most of what you say means a lot to me.
Thanks for commenting. LJ seems dead, or maybe that's just my journal. *grin*

Heeeeeee.
Sometimes, bad is just *bad*.
Wow, sorry you have to wait a *year* to take the test. Sheesh. But you'll be uber prepared!
Yes, please do tell me if you pick a book i rec'd - i'd love to know your reaction.
And lj is a leeetle bit dead these days. I dunno...kinda weird. :)
